Training and Development

At NHS 24 we really are committed to investing in the training and development of our staff. This commitment starts on day one of your employment with your participation in our Induction and Training programme.

For nurse practitioners/nurse advisors this is a 23 week programme, set out in 3 stages. You can find a link to a sample programme below. Stages 1 and 2 (weeks 1 to 8) are a combination of taught theory and practice in both a class room and live setting. You will be supported in your learning by our experienced team of Practice Educators and Team Leaders. After this initial 8 week period you will be further supported on the live floor by your assigned Team Leader and Nurse Advisor coaches. But your training doesn’t stop there; for the next 16 weeks you will come out from the floor one day every 2 weeks and participate in taught theory and supervision sessions.

For call handlers the induction programme is 5 weeks. 3 week classroom based, 1 week in operation and 1 week back in the classroom. As with nurse practitioners/ nurse advisors you will be supported in your learning by our experienced practice educators, team leaders and coaches.

After this initial training period, all our staff have access to further education and development via a variety of means. We have a Study Leave Policy (link below) which allows for staff to attend development such as short courses, conferences and seminars. Our Bursary Policy (link below) supports staff to pursue further professional or academic study. Library facilities exist in our west and east centres, with a small book collection currently being available in the north and HQ. That said, books can be borrowed form any of the libraries via a next day postal service. Our new centre in Cardonald will have a library facility. The libraries are available to staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and are stocked with a wide range of books and journals. Staff can also access the NHS e-library from them. NHS 24 also subscribes to the BMJ, which staff find helpful for their clinical development.

In addition to the above, staff have access to a wide range of clinical and non clinical development modules via our e-learning platform. This development can be accessed from each individual's own PC, or from terminals in our internet cafes, our IT training rooms, or indeed staff can access them from home at their leisure.

We also offer a variety of face to face development programmes, both clinical and non clinical for staff. These are advertised via our monthly training bulletin and on our intranet.

If you have any questions regarding the training and development we offer, please contact us as detailed on the contacts page.
