Why I like working at NHS 24
Case Studies
We firmly believe that NHS 24 is a great place to work. However don’t just take our word for it! Here, a number of our colleagues give you their views on why they work at NHS 24 and what their roles here mean to them.
David Hart
Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
David is a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at NHS24. He qualified as an RMN in the mid 1980’s and had a traditional career within Mental Nursing. So why did he decide to come to NHS24?
"Human nature often dictates that we strive to move forward in our career, however sometimes it takes us away from what we find rewarding, fulfilling, and more importantly, what we are good at. I saw joining NHS24 as an excellent opportunity to work as a practitioner again, and I am able to fit this in around my primary job. There is an excellent 6 week induction programme before you even take a call. By the end of induction everything comes together and all the hard work begins to make sense. There are on-going CPD sessions and e-learning, not to mention generous bursary opportunities for further education courses.
My job here is to take calls where patients have mental health issues. I love the challenge of each different call as they test your knowledge and skills to the max. Every day and every call is different. I finish some shifts exhausted but fulfilled because I feel I have enabled patients to receive the care they so desperately need. Calls vary widely, the majority are related to, but by no means limited to, anxiety and depression. Outcomes can vary just as much, and calls that begin as a routine call can turn into a 999 call because there is an immediate life threatening issue, but similarly some calls are people just looking for advice. Often I am consulted on clinical issues and there are opportunities to develop mental health systems and processes. NHS24 are developing mental health services to patients and I would certainly say to anyone interested that this is an exciting time to be part of this from the start."
