Why I like working at NHS 24
Case Studies
We firmly believe that NHS 24 is a great place to work. However don’t just take our word for it! Here, a number of our colleagues give you their views on why they work at NHS 24 and what their roles here mean to them.
Katherine Sharkey
Nurse Adviser
"I've been employed with NHS 24 for almost 4 years, whilst still working with Lanarkshire Bankaide as a Staff Nurse but mainly employed as a Midwife. NHS 24 allows me to care for my 2 young children, with school times, hospital appointment etc. I have a non- standard rota which allows me to work here, knowing that I can be there to care for my children, which also allays the stress of my mother caring for them during the day where demands are higher. The eight week rota is very useful when arranging midwifery shifts and life outside work, this allows me to keep my practice up-to-date which in turn benefits the frequent midwifery calls to the service.
I am currently undertaking a course in which I plan to request study leave, which I have been informed from my Team Leader the service can provide - this in turn makes working with the service an advantage.
Previous experience in working in busy A&E Dept, then abroad working with paediatrics , where I learnt from a different culture and counselling. I feel this is still ongoing with the variety of calls questioning my experience and knowledge. However, like everyone," no-one knows all" and the fact that Team Leaders, Clinical Support Managers are around - you can ask for advice or even seek answers from a GP who can call back regarding the problem at hand, when the solution is not always obvious. This is reassuring not only personally but also with callers requesting advice. I would recommend working with service - now moving to the Glasgow centre in Cardonald. I find that a smaller group of colleagues will not only improve the working environment but only open up the environment to more learning opportunities".
