heartWhy I like working at NHS 24

Case Studies

We firmly believe that NHS 24 is a great place to work. However don’t just take our word for it! Here, a number of our colleagues give you their views on why they work at NHS 24 and what their roles here mean to them.

Kirsty Byrne
Pharmacy Adviser, East Contact Centre

“I work at NHS 24 as well as locuming as a community pharmacist. After having a baby, I wanted to return to work on a part-time basis. NHS 24 offers hours in the evenings and weekends, meaning I don’t have to pay for childcare, and the minimum of 7 hours per week means I can keep working elsewhere as well. I am also contributing to my NHS pension, and get holiday pay, which I don’t get as a locum.

The job is a mixture of speaking to patients and helping call handlers and nurse advisors/practitioners with medicine queries. We are definitely recognised as the experts by our colleagues which means I feel really valued.

When I started I was given training on the telephony and computer systems, and also in specific clinical areas – for example chest pain. Also, when I took my first calls, another pharmacist was with me so I wasn’t left alone until I was ready. The ongoing CPD and call review process means my practice is constantly improving – how many community pharmacists can say their employer regularly gives them CPD! The skills I have learned at NHS 24 have also improved my practice in the community. The telephone triage skills are transferable, and I definitely ask more questions now, before I advise someone.

When I’m taking calls, the support around me is fantastic. Team Leaders (who are experienced nurses) are always available if I’m unsure.

There is also the opportunity to give CPD sessions to nurses on pharmacy topics, such as missed and extra doses. This has allowed me to develop my presentation skills, as well as giving me a chance to speak with nursing colleagues on a more informal basis.

I know the hours wouldn’t suit everyone, but with a young family I think it’s a great job!”
