We firmly believe that NHS 24 is a great place to work. However don’t just take our word for it! Here, a number of our colleagues give you their views on why they work at NHS 24 and what their roles here mean to them.
Mairi Phipps
Nurse Advisor and Coach
I joined NHS24 at its inception on 29th July 2002, unbelievably now nearly six years ago. The job has evolved greatly during this time, working more efficiently; NHS 24 has become a well-utilised service, covering the whole of Scotland. I wanted to do something "different" and that it certainly was. It has been challenging and a great learning curve, as in all areas of the job, we are always learning.
In my previous life I have worked in many areas of nursing, surgical, medical, palliative care, midwifery, orthopaedic. I can say that I have always enjoyed nursing and this is no different. I enjoy the diversity of the job and get great satisfaction from helping people reach the appropriate level of care, according to their needs and presenting symptoms. The first point of contact with the health service is, I believe one of the most important times in the pathway of care. We, as nurses in every day life utilise so many skills that we are often unaware of. All skills are nurtured in this job, the most important being "listening skills". I am also a trained coach, which has provided me with skills to allow me to listen to calls in retrospect with my colleagues and reflect, recognising good practise and recognise areas where we can possibly do better. We learn from each other as we have a great variety of areas of expertise within our workforce.
We have lots of good people eager to do a good job. I thoroughly enjoy the job and work with a great group of people and most importantly, we provide support and encouragement to each other.
